The Swedish Academy announced on Thursday that the writer will receive an million-krona ( million) award. The literature prize is part of the prestigious annual awards honouring achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, and peace.
These prizes were originally created in the will of the late Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite, with an economics prize being added later in by the Swedish central bank.
Last year, the prize went to South Korean author Han Kang for her “intense poetic prose” that explored trauma and history.
Recent recipients have a history of tackling serious themes: Svetlana Alexievich () was honoured for her critical novels about political regimes in the Soviet Union and Belarus, and Toni Morrison () was recognised for her insightful portrayals of difficult life circumstances in American society.
