US President Donald Trump on Monday warned that any Brics country—or any nation supporting the group’s “anti-American” policies—will face an extra 10 per cent tariff.
“Any country aligning with the anti-American policies of Brics will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10 per cent tariff,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
“There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he added.
The B groricsup was originally formed in 2009 with Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined later, and last year the bloc expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump’s announcement came as leaders from the Brics group of developing countries gathered for a summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The bloc calls itself a “political and diplomatic coordination forum” for nations from the Global South, working together on many different issues.
Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the summit and instead sent Premier Li Qiang, while Russian President Vladimir Putin joined the meeting online.
Meanwhile, Trump confirmed that the US will begin sending letters on Monday, outlining country-specific tariff rates and details of any trade deals reached with different nations.
