The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that the tour company New York Helicopter Tours has grounded its choppers after one of its helicopters crashed into the Hudson River last week, killing all six people on board.
The FAA said that New York Helicopter Tours had voluntarily shut down flights, and it took this step partly because the company’s operations director had been dismissed.
Earlier, a sightseeing helicopter in New York City broke apart in the air on Thursday and crashed upside down into the Hudson River, killing the pilot and a family of five Spanish tourists, news agency AP reported, citing officials.
The victims included Siemens executive Agustín Escobar, his wife Mercè Camprubí Montal, who worked as a global manager at an energy company, and their three children. The pilot also died.
In a statement on X, the FAA said it would immediately review New York Helicopter Tours’ licence and safety record.
This decision came just hours after New York Senator Chuck Schumer urged federal officials to cancel the company’s operating permits.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer also urged the FAA to increase safety checks for other helicopter tour companies. He even accused them of “cutting corners and putting profits before people.”
“One of the things we can do to honour those lives and try to save others is to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Schumer said. “We know there is one thing for sure about New York City’s helicopter tour companies: they have a deadly track record.”
