New Envoy, Old Rivalry: China's appointment sparks hope amid lingering suspicion

Chinese President Xi Jinping has officially designated Xu Feihong, a seasoned diplomat, as the new Ambassador to India, ending an extended delay of 18 months amid strained relations due to the military standoff in eastern Ladakh.

The appointment, although not formally announced in Beijing, has been confirmed by the Chinese Foreign Ministry to PTI. Xu, previously serving as Ambassador to Afghanistan and Romania, is slated to assume his responsibilities in New Delhi shortly.

Taking over from the incumbent Ambassador Sun Weidong, Xu’s appointment coincides with the ongoing Lok Sabha elections and follows prolonged negotiations between Beijing and New Delhi to resolve the military standoff.

Challenges Ahead
The challenges awaiting the new envoy include navigating the protracted military and diplomatic negotiations between China and India to defuse the eastern Ladakh standoff, which has led to a freeze in bilateral relations since May 2020. Despite progress in disengagement from certain points along the border, tensions persist in areas like Depsang and Demchok.

Moreover, analysts warn against overly optimistic interpretations of improving relations, highlighting India’s commitment to safeguarding its interests and national security in the face of perceived Chinese aggression. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar two days ago on the subject of China, said, “Previous Indian governments had even put Chinese interests ahead of our own. Today the answer is no, we will not let them dictate the play. There will be costs and consequences.”

The appointment of Xu may signal a desire for minimal diplomatic gestures, but underlying mistrust and strategic concerns persist.

Against the backdrop of geopolitical shifts and President Xi’s diplomatic maneuvers, the trajectory of Sino-Indian relations remains uncertain, with both countries cautiously balancing cooperation and confrontation.
