Nepal’s youth protesters have proposed Sushila Karki, a former chief justice, as the head of the country’s interim government.

Karki was pitched as the interim leader of the country in a virtual meeting on Wednesday that was attended by thousands of young persons.

However, participants have not yet reached a consensus, and the name has not been submitted to the Nepali Army, according to Nepali newspaper Naagrik.

The Nepali Army has previously told Firstpost that it is facilitating talks between protesters and the government but it is not part of talks . After Prime Minister KP Sharma’s Oli’s resignation on Tuesday, President Ram Chandra Paudel called upon protesters to shun violence and engage in talks.

Formally, as per the Constitution of Nepal, Oli will run a caretaker government until the formation of the new government.

Discussions over Discord on interim leader

Groups are holding discussions on the situation in the country on the platform Discord.

Nepali newspaper Kantipur reported that around 10,000 persons affiliated with ‘Youth Against Corruption’ have been holding discussions on Discord.

While the name of Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah was doing rounds earlier in the day, Karki has been the top preference since the afternoon, the report said.

Separately, Naagrik reported that protesters have “nearly reached” a consensus on presenting Karki’s name as the interim leader.

However, other names have been proposed as well, such as Mayor Shah, Harka Sampang of Dharan, Sagar Dhakal, Kulman Ghising, and Sumana Shrestha, and no decision has yet been made, the newspaper reported.
