The Commonwealth of Dominica has announced that it will confer its highest national award to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a gesture of gratitude for helping the country battle the COVID-19 pandemic.
The government of Dominica said that PM Modi will receive the Dominica Award of Honour for his contributions to strengthening the partnership between the two countries.
In a statement, the office of the Dominican prime minister said President of the Commonwealth of Dominica Sylvanie Burton will confer the award during the upcoming India-CARICOM Summit scheduled to take place in Georgetown, Guyana, from November 19 to 21.
“In February 2021, Prime Minister Modi supplied Dominica with 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine — a generous gift which enabled Dominica to extend support to its Caribbean neighbours,” the statement said.
This, however, is not the first time the Indian leader will be honoured with a country’s civilian award. As a prime minister, Modi has received a number of distinctions for his contributions and his ability to maintain strong relations.
Here are the awards he has been conferred in the past:
France’s Grand Cross of Legion: In 2023, French President Emmanuel Macron awarded PM Modi with the country’s highest civilian and military honour, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. The award is conferred to the most deserving citizens from all walks of life
UAE’s Order of Zayed: In 2019, the United Arab Emirates conferred PM Modi with the Order of Zayed, the country’s highest civilian award. The award was conferred on Modi by the Abu Dhabi crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi
Russia’s Order of St Andrew the Apostle: During his visit to Russia earlier this year, PM Modi was awarded the Order of St Andrew the Apostle, the country’s highest order of chivalry. The award was bestowed on the Indian prime minister for his contributions to developing a strategic partnership with Russia
South Korea’s Peace Prize: In 2019, PM Modi was conferred the prestigious Seoul Peace Prize for 2018 for his contribution to international cooperation and fostering global economic growth
UN’s Champions of the Earth Award: In 2018, United Nations chief Antonio Guterres awarded PM Modi with the Champions of the Earth Award. It is the highest environmental honours that honours individuals for their contributions in public and private sectors
