Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo-II International Airport, kicking off an important state visit to Russia. Later today, President Vladimir Putin will host a private dinner for Modi.
The highlight of the visit is the 22nd annual India-Russia summit, scheduled for Tuesday, where both leaders will engage in discussions covering a range of bilateral and global issues.
Following his engagements in Russia, Modi will proceed to Austria, marking the first official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over four decades, since Indira Gandhi’s visit in 1983.
The Kremlin has confirmed that President Putin will engage in face-to-face talks with Modi, with a preliminary informal meeting planned for Monday evening. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov highlighted that the leaders will have ample opportunity for extensive, agenda-free discussions.
Ahead of the visit, Indian officials indicated that key priorities for Modi include addressing the trade imbalance between India and Russia, as well as efforts to secure the release of Indian nationals caught up in the Ukraine conflict, who were reportedly deceived into participating.
