A surface-to-surface missile fired from Yemen during the anniversary of the October 7 attacks was intercepted by Israel’s air defences, the military said on Monday.

“A surface-to-surface missile was fired from Yemen,” AFP quoted the military as saying in a statement.

The missile set off air raid sirens across large swaths of central Israel, sending residents running for shelter.

“Following the sirens that sounded in a number of areas in central Israel, the surface-to-surface missile fired from Yemen was successfully intercepted by the Israeli Air Force,” Reuters quoted the military as saying in a statement.

Shortly after Israel’s statement, Yemen’s Houthis said that they fired two missiles at military targets in central Israel’s Jaffa area.

The Iran-backed Houthi movement which controls northern Yemen has frequently attacked Israel over the past year in what it says is solidarity with the Palestinians.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said on that it would expand its operations against Hezbollah to Lebanon’s coast south of the Al-Awali river, and warned people to stay away from the shore in the area.

The army “will soon operate in the maritime area against Hezbollah’s terrorist activities” south of the Al-Awali river, AFP quoted army spokesman Avichay Adraee as saying in a statement published in Arabic on social media.
