Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday said she had ruled out any US military intervention to combat drug cartels, following what she described as a “good conversation” with President Donald Trump on security and drug trafficking.
Speaking at her daily press conference, Sheinbaum said she had declined offers of military action raised by Trump and made clear that US forces would not operate inside Mexico.
She added that she would seek another call with Washington if any statements were made suggesting otherwise.
“We continue to collaborate within the framework of our sovereignty… We seek coordination without subordination,” Reuters quoted her as saying.
Earlier on Monday, Sheinbaum took to X to say that the discussion covered security measures while respecting Mexico’s sovereignty, alongside talks on reducing drug trafficking, trade, and investment between the two countries.

On Sunday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente about the need for closer cooperation to dismantle Mexico’s violent narco-terrorist networks and curb the trafficking of fentanyl and weapons, Reuters quoted State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott as saying in a statement.
The discussions come after US President Donald Trump, in remarks to Fox News last week, claimed that cartels were effectively running Mexico and suggested that the US could target land-based cartel operations.
His comments mark the latest in a series of escalating threats to deploy US military force against drug cartels operating within Mexican territory.
Responding to the conversation, Sheinbaum said on X that “collaboration and cooperation within a framework of mutual respect always yield results.”
