US First Lady Melania Trump has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to her letter of concern over child victims of the Russia-Ukraine war by informing her that children are being returned to their families.
Melania announced on Friday that, as a result of an “open channel of communication” with Putin, several Ukrainian children have been reunited with their respective families. “Eight children have been rejoined with their families during the past 24 hours,” Flotus said.
The Ukrainian government says that since February 2022, at least 19,500 Ukrainian children have been deported and forcibly taken from their homes to Russia and Russian-occupied territories.
What has Putin informed?
The First Lady said that out of the eight children who have returned recently, three were separated from their families and displaced to Russia due to front-line fighting between armed forces.
“Each child has lived in turmoil because of the war in Ukraine,” Melania said.
The First Lady revealed that the reunification of children with their families had been coordinated by both Ukrainian and Russian authorities. She said she received a comprehensive report detailing the “identities and circumstances” of each child, along with photographs.
“The US government confirmed the facts,” she stated.
Melania Trump also noted that she has “learned a lot about this matter” since initially sending a letter to Putin, adding that he had “responded in writing.”
