The disappearance of the ill-fated Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 remains one of the biggest aviation mysteries to date. The Boeing 777 plane vanished without a trace in the Indian Ocean while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014 and all the 239 occupants on board were presumed dead. Reuters[/caption] Both the extensive investigation into the cause of the crash and the exhaustive search for any debris of the aircraft produced no concrete results. The fate of the plane and its passengers are still shrouded in mystery, one year on. In fact the absence of debris gave rise to a number of conspiracy theories involving terrorism and espionage over the last year. But a mathematician from Texas A&M University has supposedly figured out the possible reason for the complete disappearance of the airplane. According to a recent report published Notices of the American Mathematical Society by mathematicians from , the plane nosedived into the Indian ocean at a 90 degree angle, which means it would have sunk straight to the bottom of the ocean. This could explain the lack of any debris or oil in the ocean. They reached this conclusion using computer simulations and applied mathematics. “The true final moments of MH370 are likely to remain a mystery until someday when its black box is finally recovered and decoded. But forensics strongly supports that MH370 plunged into the ocean in a nosedive.” “Using applied mathematics, computational fluid dynamics and numerical simulations of a Boeing 777 in a classic “water entry” problem, an international research team led by Texas A&M University at Qatar mathematician Goong Chen has concluded that Malaysian Airlines flight 370 (MH370) entered the southern Indian Ocean at a vertical or steep angle, resulting in no large bending moment necessary to create the typical debris field that was absent in the March 2014 crash,” reads an excerpt from the report.
