The assault on such a high-profile target in downtown Kabul raises fresh questions about security as Afghan forces battle a resurgent Taliban for the first time without the aid of NATO forces, who ended their combat mission in December.

The Taliban launched a countrywide offensive in late April, stepping up attacks on government and foreign targets in what is expected to be the bloodiest fighting season in a decade.

The militants recently rebuffed requests from senior Afghan clerics to halt attacks during the fasting month of Ramadan even as a surge in violence has sent civilian casualties soaring.

Today’s parliament attack also follows a spate of recent attacks, which have targetted Kabul.

On 14 May, gunmen killed 14 people, including 9 foreigners, when they stormed a guesthouse in central Kabul.

On 26 May, gunmen attacked another guesthouse, housing dozens of foreign contractors, albeit without killing any of them.

A Taliban suicide bomber and several gunmen attacked the parliament building, according to Reuters. The attack shattered windows and forced MPs to flee the building, it said. Afghan security officials said all the politicians were safe.

“A suicide bomber blew himself up just outside the parliament building and several fighters took positions in a building close to parliament,” Ebadullah Karimi, spokesman for Kabul police, told Reuters.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility.  “We have launched an attack on parliament as there was an important gathering to introduce the country’s defence minister,” he said by phone.

The Taliban attacked the Afghan parliament on Monday, setting off at least one large bomb and igniting a gunbattle with security forces, police and witnesses said. An Associated Press reporter heard heavy gunfire outside the parliament and saw black smoke billowing from the entrance as ambulances raced to the scene.

Police say the Taliban have launched an attack outside the Afghan parliament, setting off four large bombs as lawmakers were meeting inside. CNN IBN Police officer Mohammad Asif said gunfire had broken out at the scene on Monday and that there was no immediate word on casualties. Taliban insurgents have launched complex attacks on government targets in the past. The Taliban captured a second district in the northern Kunduz province early Monday after heavy fighting with local security forces. Mohammad Yusuf Ayubi, head of the provincial council, said the insurgents attacked the district of Dashti Archi from four sides, setting off heavy fighting before seizing full control of the area. He said local forces suffered casualties but did not have a precise count. He said around 150,000 residents of the district were unable to leave. The Taliban confirmed that they had captured the district, as well as ammunition and four tanks, in an emailed statement. The Taliban seized control of the Chardara district in Kunduz on Sunday. The insurgents attacked the provincial capital, also called Kunduz, in a surprise attack in April and nearly captured the city before Afghan forces pushed them back. Afghan forces have struggled to fend off Taliban advances since the US and NATO combat mission officially concluded at the end of last year. AP
