1:40 pm: J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah regrets the incident and apologises to Sanaullah’s family Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Thursday offered his “sincere apology” to the family of Sanaullah who died in a Chandigarh hospital six days after being attacked in a Jammu jail. “Although it’s scant consolation, I’d like to offer a sincere apology to the family…” Abdullah tweeted. The chief minister regretted that such a thing should have happened at all, but assured that those responsible for dereliction of duty in this incident would not go unpunished. “While the inquiry will fix responsibility for any dereliction of duty, the fact that this (happened) at all is a matter of great regret”, he said in another post. Abdullah also thanked doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu and at PGIMER in Chandigarh for the efforts they made to save Sanaullah’s life. (IANS) 1:15 pm: Sarabjit’s sister says Sanaullah shouldn’t have met with same fate as Sarabjit “Whatever happened with Sanaullah Haq was very bad and shouldn’t have taken place. I express my sympathy to his family in this hour of grief,” Dalbir Kaur, deceased Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh’s sister, said today. “I would appeal to the Indian prisoners not to follow in Pakistan’s footsteps,” she said. She also appealed to both the Indian & Pakistani government to increase the security of prisoners in the respective country’s jails so that such incidents were not repeated. 11. 10 am: Will consult all stakeholders before sending body back Govt officials have now told CNN-IBN that a decision on sending back Sanaullah’s body will be taken only after due consultations with all stakeholders. An official said that the Jammu Kashmir government, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Pakistan High Commission will be consulted before taking a decision. 11. 05 am: Unfortunate Sanaullah was attacked: J&K Home Minister Jammu Kashmir Home Minister Sajjad Ah. Kitchloo said that it was very unfortunate Sanaullah was attacked in India. “We have set up a committee to look into the safety of prisoners in the state and all efforts are being taken to make sure this incident does not repeat.” 10. 43 am: Will provide assistance to send body back: Kaur Minister of State for External Affairs Preenet Kaur expressed her condolences to the family of Pakistan prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay. “Extend my condolences to his (Sanaullah’s) family. Will facilitate and provide assistance to send his body back.” 10. 05 am: Sanaullah’s body will be flown out of Chandigarh CNN-IBN reports that Sanaullah’s body will be flown to either Lahore or Sialkot once formalities are complete. Two Pakistan high commission officials and two family members will escort the body from Chandigarh. 10. oo am: Despite our best efforts, he succumbed to injuries: MEA The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said that despite the government’s best efforts, Ranjay succumbed to his injures. “Unfortunately despite our best efforts he (Sanaullah) succumbed to injuries today morning.. We have informed Pakistan and are in touch with them,” MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said. “We would make best efforts and arrangements to send back Sanaullah’s body.” 9. 40 am: Will send back body once procedures complete, says Shinde Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has said that the body of Sanaullah will be handed over to Pakistan officials once the required procedures and formalities are complete. 9. 35 am: Autopsy on Sanaullah underway Medical officials are conducting an autopsy on the body of Pakistan prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, CNN-IBN reports. The post mortem will be conducted by a medical board. The proceedings will take place in the presence of a magistrate and it will be video recorded. 9. 25 am: India-Pak must have agreement on safety of prisoners A Pakistan high commission official has said that it an agreement on the safety of prisoners is the need of the hour. The body has been shifted to the mortuary of the Institute from the ICU in the Advanced Trauma Centre. 9. 05 am: Pakistan asks for an international probe into Sanaullah’s murder Pakistan has asked that the extra-judicial murder of Sanaullah Ranjay needs to be probed by an international agency. 9. oo am: Want to expose this extra judicial murder: Pak official Manzoor Memon, Pak High Commission spokesperson has expressed his grief to Sanaullah’s family and said it is important that ’those elements’ behind killing of Sanaullah are exposed. “This is an extra-judicial murder of an innocent Pakistan citizen, we need to expose it. " Memon has also asked the Indian government to make arrangements to send him back to Pakistan so that his final rites can be completed according to Islamic law. 8. 5o am: Pakistan asks India to make arrangements to send body back Pakistan has requested India to make arrangements to send Sanaullah Ranjay’s body back to his country. 8. 20 am: **Official announcement expected soon ** CNN-IBN reports that Sanaullah Ranjay passed away on Thursday morning at 6.30 am due to multiple organ failure. PTI[/caption] Doctors treating him had said Sanaullah suffered renal failure on Wednesday and that his condition was “extremely critical”. Sanaullah, who was undergoing life imprisonment at Jammu’s Kot Bhalwal Jail, was attacked earlier this month by an Indian prisoner. The attack took place a day after Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner in Pakistan, succumbed to grievous injuries following a murderous assault in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.   8 May: SC raps Jammu Kashmir govt On Wednesday, the Supreme Court frowned on the failure of the Jammu and Kashmir government to anticipate the possibility of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah being attacked in jail in the wake of the death of  Sarabjit Singh  after being assaulted in a Lahore jail. “You must have visualized that if something has happened in Pakistan, you should have taken precautions. You cannot allow rule of law to be compromised. Such incidents compromise rule of law,” a bench of Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice Kurien Joseph said. You can read more about it here.  4 May, 4. 00 pm: Sanaullah’s attacker sent to police custody Vinod Kumar, who had allegedly attacked and critically injured a Pakistani prisoner in Kot Balwal jail in Jammu, was remanded to seven days police custody. The Forest Court has remanded prisoner Vinod Kumar to seven days police custody in connection with the attack on the Pakistani prisoner after the police sought Kumar’s custody for further investigation into the case, a police officer told PTI. 3 May, 5. 30 pm: Pakistan prisoner condition still critical The condition of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who was injured in a scuffle with another inmate in Jammu jail, remained critical on Saturday. Sanaullah is on a “ventilator, remains unconsicious and is on dopamine and noradrenaline infusions to maintain his blood pressure”, sources at the Post Graduate Institue of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) said. 8. 30 pm: Haq will not be sent back to Pakistan CNN-IBN reports that India will not send back Pakistan prisoner Sanaullah Haq. Haq’s condition, according to reports, is now stable and he is undergoing treatment at Chandigarh’s multi-speciality Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science and Research (PGIMER). Pakistan had earlier today asked India to release Haq and send him back to Pakistan on humanitarian grounds.
