Amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran, the Embassy of India in Tehran has issued an advisory urging Indian nationals in the country — including students, pilgrims, business persons and tourists — to leave using available means of transport.
Fresh advisory reiterates earlier caution
The Embassy said the latest notice follows its advisory of 14 January 2026, which urged citizens to exercise caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, remain in contact with the mission, and monitor local media for developments.
“In continuation of the advisory issued by the Government of India on 5 January 2026, and in view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran (students, pilgrims, business persons and tourists) are advised to leave Iran by available means of transport, including commercial flights,” the advisory said.
“All Indian citizens and PIOs should exercise due caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Iran and monitor local media for any developments,” it added.
Embassy asks Indians in Iran to register immediately
The Embassy asked all Indian nationals in Iran who have not yet registered with it to do so immediately. Citizens have been advised to keep travel and immigration documents, including passports and IDs, readily available and to contact the mission for assistance if required. Earlier MEA advisory on travel
Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs on 14 February urged citizens to avoid travel to Iran until further notice. The ministry had also advised against non-essential travel in its 5 January 2026 advisory and asked Indian citizens and PIOs currently in Iran to exercise caution, avoid protest areas, closely monitor news, and follow updates from the Embassy. Indian nationals residing in Iran on resident visas were advised to register with the mission if they had not already done so.
Rising tensions as strikes on Iran looms
Iran and the US have not reached a nuclear agreement so far, with the next round of talks scheduled for 25 February in Oman. US President Donald Trump and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have exchanged sharp remarks amid uncertainty over the deal.
Washington has increased its military presence around Iran, with US naval assets deployed in the region. Reports said a US aircraft carrier was sighted near Gibraltar heading towards West Asia, while another carrier is positioned in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Oman. According to a report by The New York Times, the US has evacuated hundreds of troops from Al Udeid Air Base and the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain.
Tensions between Iran and the US remain high, with reports indicating that President Trump may consider a limited strike on Iran amid the continuing impasse over the nuclear deal.
