Landslide in Indonesia’s West Java leaves 7 dead, over 80 missing

A landslide triggered by heavy overnight rainfall swept through a village in West Bandung Regency, West Java, early Saturday, killing at least seven people and damaging several homes. More than 80 others remain missing, Indonesia’s national disaster agency said.

The slide occurred at around 2:30 am on Indonesia’s main island of Java.

“A landslide occurred in West Bandung Regency, West Java Province, in the early hours of Saturday, killing seven people,” Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the national disaster agency, or BNPB, said.

“As of Saturday 10:30 am, dozens of residents were reported safe, and 83 people were still being searched for,” he added.

Seasonal disasters across the region

Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season, which typically runs from October to March.

Tropical storms and intense monsoon rains battered parts of South and Southeast Asia late last year, triggering deadly landslides and floods from the rainforests of Indonesia’s Sumatra to highland plantations in Sri Lanka.

Around 1,200 people died in the Sumatra flood, and more than 240,000 were displaced, according to the BNPB.

Environmental concerns

Environmentalists and experts have pointed to the role forest loss played in the flooding and landslides that washed torrents of mud into villages.

The government this week stripped more than two dozen permits from forestry, mining and hydroelectric companies in Sumatra.

This latest landslide also comes after torrential rains battered Indonesia’s Siau island this month, causing a flash flood that killed at least 16 people.

China places top general under investigation in Xi’s sweeping military purge

China’s top general Zhang Youxia and CMC chief of staff Liu Zhenli are under investigation for “serious violations of discipline and the law,” marking a major escalation in Xi Jinping’s military purge. The Central Military Commission now has only two members: President Xi and General Zhang Shengmin, after all six uniformed commanders appointed in 2022 were removed. Analysts say Zhang’s removal is one of the most significant military purges in decades, reflecting Xi’s efforts to consolidate control and eliminate rivals within the PLA.
