Kenya: Suspected al-Shabab militants kill 36 workers

Nairobi, Kenya: Kenya police say at least 36 quarry workers were killed in northern Kenya by suspected Islamic extremists from Somalia. Kenyan police chief David Kimaiyo confirmed the workers were killed early Tuesday in Mandera County near the border with Somalia. [caption id=“attachment_1605477” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]  Representational image: AP[/caption] Other police sources, who insisted on anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the press, said the workers were ambushed at the quarry as they slept by the gunmen. The non-Muslims were singled out and killed. The police officials said some were shot dead and others were decapitated. No group has yet claimed responsibility but the attack bears the hallmarks of Somalia’s Islamic militant rebels, al-Shabab. Al-Shabab attacked a bus in Mandera County last week in which 28 non-Muslims were separated from other passengers and shot dead. AP
