As the race for the White House intensifies, former US President Donald Trump unleashed lethal attacks against his 2024 US presidential rival Kamala Harris. In one instance, the Republican presidential nominee, questioned Harris’ racial identity while he was sitting in front of a black journalists.
“Is she Indian or is she black?” Trump said which garnered gasps from the audience at a convention hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago. “I’ve known her a long time, indirectly not directly… and she was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage,” he furthered.
“I didn’t know she was black, until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black, and now she wants to be known as black, so I don’t know, is she Indian or is she black?” he asked.
President Trump: “I don’t think I’ve ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner… are you with ABC because I think they’re a fake news network, a terrible network. I think it’s disgraceful that I came here in good spirit, I love the black population of this country.… pic.twitter.com/OrNsHWVITi

Harris’ campaign responds
Meanwhile, an aide to the vice president described Trump’s appearance at the Chicago event as an “absolute disaster”. It is pertinent to note that the 59-year-old presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother. Both her parents immigrated to the United States.
Another source close to her campaign went on to brand the comments as “completely unhinged,” “insulting and repulsive,” Sky News reported. The US White House also came to Kamala’s defence and condemned the jabs. Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, called Trump’s remarks “repulsive” and “insulting” during a Wednesday White House briefing.
“I think it’s insulting for anybody. It doesn’t matter if it’s a former leader, a former president, it is insulting,” she said. “She is the vice president of the United States. Kamala Harris. We have to put some respect on her name. Period," she added. Harris describes herself as African American and South Asian Indian American.
Ever since she announced her candidature for the presidency she has been facing racist and sexist attacks from her opponents. Last month, some of the members from the GOP came out in Harris’ support warning fellow party members against using overtly racist and sexist attacks against the vice president.
At a closed-door meeting of House Republicans, National Republican Congressional Committee, last week, chairman Richard Hudson urged lawmakers to stick to criticizing Harris for her role in Biden-Harris administration policies. “This election will be about policies and not personalities,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters after the meeting.
“This is not personal with regard to Kamala Harris,” he added, “and her ethnicity or her gender has nothing to do with this whatsoever.”
