Japan struck by 6.0 magnitude earthquake just eight days after 1 Jan temblor killed 200 people

Japan has been struck by another earthquake of 6.0 magnitude Tuesday, less than ten days after massive tremors jolted the country claiming over 200 lives. The earthquake, on Tuesday, off central Japan caused strong shaking but no tsunami warning has been given yet, the government said. As per the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake on 9 January struck off the Sea of Japan coast, rattling the same part of the country where a powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude flattened parts of central Japan on New Year’s Day and its aftershocks caused widespread destruction. According to officials in Ishikawa Prefecture, the number of people killed in 1 January, 2024, earthquake has risen to 202. Also, more than 100 people are still unaccounted for, and tens of thousands impacted by the disaster are still struggling. Intensive search for the missing people was underway by the police in the city of Wajima, near the New Year’s Day quake’s epicenter. A massive fire in the center of the city destroyed more than 200 buildings in an area of 48,000 square meters. In Ishikawa Prefecture, more than 3,000 people in the Noto region remain isolated. Also, experts have found that the Noto Peninsula in central Japan, which juts out into the Sea of Japan, expanded by about 4.4 square kilometers as a result of the fatal 1 January earthquake. In Wajima City, people do not have adequate drinking water and as per reports, they are boiling spring water to drink as well as bringing buckets of water from a river so they can flush their toilets. Japan’s Meteorological Agency have told people that they should not let their guard down just yet. The agency is warning of possible quakes with five or more intensity on Japan’s zero-to-seven seismic scale over the coming month.
