Jaishankar meets Canadian FM Anita Anand in New York, welcomes appointment of high commissioners to rebuild ties

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in New York to discuss strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Taking to X, Jaishankar wrote, “A good meeting with FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada this morning in New York.”

Jaishankar described the meeting as positive and welcomed the recent appointment of High Commissioners as an important step in rebuilding ties.

“The appointment of High Commissioners is welcome as we rebuild ties. Discussed further steps in that regard today,” he added, referring to the recent decision by both countries to reinstate top diplomatic posts after months of tensions.

He also expressed hope to host Foreign Minister Anand in India in the near future.

India-Canada relations hit a low point in 2023 after the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged possible Indian government involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani separatist. The accusations triggered a major diplomatic crisis, leading both countries to expel diplomats in retaliation.
