Israel identifies body of hostage Tal Haimi recovered from Gaza
Haimi, a resident of Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak, took part in the defense of the kibbutz during the Hamas assault on the morning of October 7, 2023.

Israel announced on Tuesday that it has identified the remains of Sergeant Major Tal Haimi, who was killed during the October 7, 2023, attack and subsequently held captive in Gaza. The release of Haimi’s body was facilitated overnight by Hamas.

Haimi, a 42-year-old father of four and a member of the emergency response team at Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak, was a fourth-generation resident of the community near the Gaza border. Israel is still awaiting the remains of 15 other deceased hostages under the terms of the fragile truce, though 13 bodies have been returned since the ceasefire began.

Meanwhile, a senior Hamas negotiator, Khalil al-Hayya, reaffirmed the Hamas’ dedication to upholding the ceasefire, saying it is committed to seeing the war “ends once and for all.” Speaking from Cairo, Al-Hayya stated that Hamas received assurances from mediators and US officials that the conflict is permanently ended.

Truce on thin ice

The truce, however, remains deeply strained.

Recent days have seen exchanges of fire, with Israel launching retaliatory strikes after its military reported that Hamas had fired at troops. These strikes have resulted in at least 80 Palestinian deaths since the ceasefire took effect.

The stability of the agreement is paramount, with US Vice President JD Vance expected to visit the region today to help shore up the precarious truce.

Hamas is now pressing international mediators to ensure Israel meets its obligations, particularly regarding the delivery of shelter, medical supplies, and winterisation items into Gaza ahead of changing weather conditions.
