Iraqi forces edge into Mosul, major urban warfare lies ahead


The Islamic State group is forcibly gathering people in and around Mosul for possible use as human shields against advancing Iraqi forces, said residents, confirming UN fears. AP


Iraq launched a massive operation to retake Mosul from the extremists a little more than two weeks ago, and its forces have reached the eastern outskirts of the city. AP


Elite Iraqi forces entered the city after Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi warned jihadists who hold it that they have no choice but to surrender or die. AP
