Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei met the country’s envoy who was injured in Lebanon amid speculations surrounding his health. Rumours about Khamenei being in a coma started to spread like wildfire amid reports that Iran has chosen Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to succeed his father.
On Sunday, the Iranian leader met the country’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani. According to Iranian state agency IRNA, the meeting took place in Tehran on Sunday. Amani faced the brunt of the ongoing Middle East crisis after he was injured in pager explosions that rocked Lebanon in September.
The Iranian envoy briefed the Supreme leader about his health conditions. The pager and device explosions in multiple regions of Lebanon killing dozens of people including civilians. One of these explosions occurred near the Iranian ambassador, causing injuries to him, including to his left eye.
Amani was later transferred to Tehran to receive medical treatment. The Iranian envoy is still in the country and will return to Lebanon soon to resume his diplomatic mission.
Speculations brew over Khamenei’s health
On Saturday, multiple social media posts started surfacing, claiming that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, “is in a state of coma”. The claims went viral a month after The New York Times reported that the 85-year-old Iranian supreme leader was suffering from a “serious medical condition”. The report suggested that Khamenei’s second-oldest son, Mojtaba Khamenei will likely succeed him when he dies.
Khamenei’s meeting with the Iranian envoy on Sunday refuted the claim the 85-year-old supreme leader is in a state of coma. The social media frenzy over the matter escalated after Images of Ali Khamenei on a hospital bed also surfaced, adding to the rumours of him being in a coma.
However, the images have been debunked and many claimed that they were clicked back in 2014.
