Iran Protests Live Updates: Iranian FM says 'misinformation campaign' dragging US into a conflict

In an interview with Fox News, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that a “misinformation campaign” surrounding the protests in his country is responsible for dragging the US into a conflict with Tehran.

Araghchi dismissed reports of thousands of protest-related deaths as a “misinformation campaign,” insisting the true toll was only in the hundreds. He argued that after ten days of peaceful demonstrations, the situation shifted into a “terrorist operation” orchestrated by external forces, claiming these “terrorist elements” were responsible for shooting civilians and security personnel alike.

Iran Protests Live Updates: Trump casts doubt over Pahlavi's support in Iran

US President Donald Trump has said that while Reza Pahlavi, the opposition figure in Iran, “seems very nice,” he is unsure if the exiled crown prince can muster enough support to rule the country in the future.

“He seems very nice, but I don’t know how he’d play within his own country. I don’t know whether or not his country would accept his leadership, and certainly if they would, that would be fine with me,” Trump told Reuters.

Iran Protests Live Updates: Iran has reopened its airspace after shutting it down for all flights as violent protests continue for the third week. Several countries, including India and the US, had issued travel advisories for their citizens in Iran, asking them to leave the country at the earliest.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said Wednesday he had been told the killings of protesters in Iran had been halted, but added that he would “watch it and see” about threatened military action.

Amid all this, a rights group in Iran has said that at least 3,428 people have died as the Islamic Regime tries to quell the protests. In a surprise announcement at the White House, Trump said he had now received assurances from “very important sources on the other side” that Tehran had now stopped, and that executions would not go ahead.

“They’ve said the killing has stopped and the executions won’t take place – there were supposed to be a lot of executions today and that the executions won’t take place – and we’re going to find out,” Trump said.

At the same time, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Fox News that there will “no hanging today or tomorrow.” “I can tell you, I’m confident that there is no plan for hanging,” Araghchi said, also accusing Israel of orchestrating violence, without providing evidence.

But Araghchi said the Iranian government was “in full control” and reported an atmosphere of “calm” after what he called three days of “terrorist operation.”

Iran also struck a defiant tone about responding to any US attack, as Washington appeared to draw down staff at a base in Qatar that Tehran targeted in a strike last year.
