Iran’s capital Tehran is all set to host several foreign leaders who will attend president Ebrahim Raisi’s funeral on Wednesday after the leader died in a helicopter crash in northern Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

Thousands of people were already seen gathering in the capital city to bid farewell to Raisi. Iranian state media on Monday confirmed Raisi’s death after his chopper crashed on Sunday evening. Several other leaders, including Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, were present with the president in the helicopter during the fatal crash.

While prominent world leaders paid their respects to the Iranian president, many will also be attending his funeral in Tehran on May 22. Here’s a list of attendees:

  • Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh

  • Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan

  • Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani

  • India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar

  • Head of the Russian Duma Vyacheslav Volodin

  • Representatives of the Taliban from Afghanistan

  • Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif

Khamenei says prayer for Raisi

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei presided over the ceremony and held prayers for Raisi and the others who died in the crash.

The coffins of the slain leaders will be taken from Tehran’s Revolutionary Square to Freedom Square where supporters are congregated for the next stage of the procession.

Following this, Raisi’s body will be moved to Iran’s second-largest city of Mashhad where he was born and raised.
