Japan has been coordinating with the US, Australia, and India to hold a Quad foreign ministers meeting, on the sidelines of swearing-in ceremony of US President-elect Donald Trump, Japan-based NHK World reported citing sources.
The Japanese government plans to make a final decision on the matter after analysing US Senate procedures for the approval of the Cabinet lineup, NHK World reported.
Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi said on Sunday that he will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Trump administration on January 20.
Japan has expressed hope that the new US administration will keep importance of maintaining and strengthening cooperation among the four nations for a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The President-elect has chosen Marco Rubio as the US Secretary of State.
Trump invites Australian FM
Trump has also invited Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to his swearing-in ceremony.
“I am honoured to be invited to attend President Donald Trump’s inauguration. It is a demonstration of the steadfast alliance between Australia and the United States,” Wong said in a statement.
India EAM Jaishankar to attend Trump inauguration
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent the Indian government at the swearing-in ceremony of US President-elect.
Jaishankar is attending the swearing-in ceremony at the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, according to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) press release.
Apart from attending the swearing, Jaishankar will also have meetings with representatives of the incoming administration, as well as some other foreign dignitaries visiting the US on that occasion.
