Move over Rajguru, Sukhdev, Bhagat Singh and Mahatma Gandhi. We have a new age patriot who almost went to jail in the US for the sake of India’s sovereignty and pride - Devyani Khobragade. Could there have been a better way of taking on the imperialistic America than by (allegedly) violating their law and cocking a snook at them by flying out of their soil in the nick of time? As her father Uttam Khobragade said in a press conference on Friday morning in Delhi, India may be poor, but Indians are proud. Devyani indeed held aloft our pride and sovereignty at great risk of personal harm! Father Kobragade’s words were awe-inspiring - a proud father hailing his patriotic daughter who took on the strongest empire in the world. “Devyani was fighting to uphold the sovereignty of this country…When alternatives were offered she sacrificed the personal comfort,” he said according to NDTV. “This was the moment the entire nation stood together for the cause dearer to every Indian, to ascertain sovereignty of the nation and judicial system.” [caption id=“attachment_1292655” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Uttam Khobragade, father of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, after meeting Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde in New Delhi. Who is Preet Bharara to dispense law to an Indian? “She as a proud Indian gave more importance to the judicial system of India over the personal relief she was being offered,” her father said. She could have continued on the American soil, by accepting the bargain plea, but a true and proud patriotic Indian, she asked them to go to hell. Who wants to stay in America when the entire nation beckons you? It’s truly remarkable that the family has decided not to touch American soil again! India’s victory in spiriting its valiant “diplomat” out of the US, when its judiciary has indicted her in a case, certainly behoves the status of a superpower. It might take months to get an innocent sailor out of a non decrepit Togo, we may never reach out to the thousands of other citizens (about 6000 and, perhaps many more with no information available to the government) languishing in far away jails - some living hells - but we will not bow down to America. We will show our strength by violating their law and defying their courts. Our system of equality and dispensation of justice is far superior than that of the US. We may be poor, but we are proud.
