Cairo: India would continue to respect the wishes of the Egyptian people and work with the government chosen by them, Indian envoy to Egypt has said. AP image[/caption] “Egypt is currently experiencing a period of political transition and that India will continue to respect the wishes of the Egyptian people and work with the government chosen by them,” said Ambassador Navdeep Suri. His comments were significant as they came a day after Egypt’s army backed its chief Field Marshall Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who led the removal of Islamist and first freely elected President Mohamed Morsi, to run for the presidency. “It was possible to build a genuinely democratic and pluralistic society,” Suri said while citing Indian democracy’s success despite diversity across ethnic, linguistic and religious lines. He was speaking at a reception yesterday hosted by the Embassy of India here to celebrate India’s Republic Day. The event was attended by a large number of dignitaries, including Deputy Prime Minister Ziad Bahaa El Din and Industry and Trade Minister Mouneer Fakhry Abdel Nour. PTI
