Speaking about the abductions Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, "We are in regular touch with the Indian embassy in Libya and with families of those abducted."

He said,"Of the four Indians abducted, three are faculty in the University of Sirte and one works there."

Swarup told the media, "Two of them are from Hyderabad, one from Raichur and one from Karnatak."

The ministry of external affairs is trying to find out more information about the kidnapped Indian teachers.

The kidnapping comes even as the fate of 39 Indians kidnapped in June 2014 from Mosul in Iraq remains unknown. The 39 were kidnapped by the Islamic State militants. The government maintains the men, all labourers from mostly Punjab, are still alive.

The Indian government had last year issued an advisory asking its citizens to leave Libya.
