US President Donald Trump on Monday called for the immediate evacuation of Tehran and repeated his claim that Iran should have accepted a nuclear deal with the United States.
Trump’s statement sparked panic in Tehran — a city home to around 10 million people — after explosions were reported in the eastern part of the capital.
A White House official later clarified that the president was not literally calling for residents to evacuate Tehran.
“Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and what a waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CANNOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump said Iran appears willing to discuss easing tensions with Israel and should act quickly “before it’s too late.”
“I see that Iran is not winning this war,” he said. “They should talk, and they should talk immediately — before it’s too late.”
