When asked about the role of the US in the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh, US President Donald Trump dodged the question and said, “I’ll leave Bangladesh to PM Modi."
The statement came during a joint press conference between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump after bilateral talks between the two leaders at the White House.
PM Modi is in Washington for his two-day state visit to the United States.
The Sheikh Hasina-led government in Bangladesh was toppled by a student-led mass protest in August last year, compelling her to flee to neighbouring India.
Subsequently, an interim government was established under Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus. This administration has announced plans to hold general elections by December 2025.
The United Nations has reported that during the crackdown on these protests, up to 1,400 individuals were killed, including approximately 180 children.
