Small Ukrainian army units have reportedly participated in fighting against Russian proxies in Sudan, assisting the leader of that nation in repelling rebel forces backed by the Wagner Group.

The Wall Street Journal claims that in the summer of 2023, under siege by rebel troops, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the de facto ruler of Sudan, pleaded to Ukraine for help. In April 2023, a civil war broke out in the African nation between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the military government of Burhan.

As the outlet noted, “Burhan had been quietly supplying Kyiv with weapons since shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022,” Kyiv responded favorably in an effort to reduce Russia’s influence overseas.

According to reports, Ukrainian commandos arrived in Sudan in the middle of August 2023, joined the battle to drive rebel forces from Khartoum, and gave Burhan’s guards fresh weapons, supplies, and instruction. The Wall Street Journal claims that no Ukrainian team that was sent to Sudan suffered any casualties.

Kiev has not acknowledged its participation in the Sudanese conflict in public. Engagement in the fighting may jeopardize ties with important allies such as the United States, which has charged both the rebel and government troops of war crimes and called for an end to military assistance to the combatants.

In September 2023, Zelensky and Burhan had a “unplanned meeting” at Ireland’s Shannon Airport to talk about security issues and the actions of parties with Russian support in Sudan.
