Our neighbour China is ahead of us in many areas. From the Olympic medal tally to population, India has been playing catch up-to-the-next-door-‘dragon’. In fact, even when it comes to traffic jams, we are amateurs compared to the Chinese. We might crib about the horrendous traffic of Mumbai when the local trains shut down for some reason or traffic jams caused due to Ganpati celebrations, but forget our measly traffic troubles and shed a tear for those thousands who were stuck on the G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau (Jinggang’ao) expressway last Tuesday. a report in the Huffington Post, the insane traffic jam happened when thousands of Chinese citizens returned home at the same time after a seven-day public holiday, the “Golden Week”, celebrating the country’s national day. A video of the mega traffic jam shows thousands of cars, packed in rows, lumbering on a highway. The jam happened when around 50 lanes of traffic were bottlenecked into a much smaller strip of road after a toll station. The resulting traffic jam looks like it’s a highway to hell. So, when you’re cursing the car ahead of you at a red signal, think of the poor Chinese stuck in that traffic jam. We’d be happy to be second to China in this respect. Watch the video of the traffic jam below:
