Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week said that he would support US Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential elections. But as it turns out, he was joking about it.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during an interview with Sky News Arabia, said, “It was a joke. President Putin has a good sense of humor. He often jokes during his statements and interviews.”
Putin’s comments prompted the White House to say that he should stop commenting on the US Presidential Elections.
“I see no long-term differences in our attitude to the current or previous elections in the United States, because it is ruled by the notorious ‘deep state’,” Lavrov added.
What did Putin say?
Speaking at an economic forum, Putin said that Russia “backs the Democratic nominee, Harris.”
“I told you, our favorite, if I may say so, was the current president, Mr. Biden. He was removed from the race, but he advised all his supporters to support Ms. Harris. So we will do it as well, we will root for her,” he said with a smirk on his face.
The president added that Harris’ “infectious laugh” means that “she’s doing well.”
“And if she is doing well, then … Trump introduced so many restrictions and sanctions against Russia, like no other president had ever introduced before him. And if Ms. Harris is doing well, perhaps she will refrain from doing anything like that,” he said.
