South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize for Literature.
Han has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize for Literature “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life”, said the Nobel committee.

Kang, born in 1970 in a literary family, is also associated with art and music. She began her writing career in 1993 with the publication of a number of poems. Her debut in prose happened in 1995 with the short story collection ‘Love of Yeosu’. It was followed by several novels and short stories.
Kang’s international breakthrough came with her 2015 novel ‘The Vegetarian’. The three-part book portrays the violent consequences that ensue the protagonist Yeong-hye refuses to submit to the norms of food intake, said the Nobel committee.
“She has a unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead, and in her poetic and experimental style has become an innovator in contemporary prose,” noted the Nobel committee.
