Guyana’s President Irfan Ali hails PM Modi, calls him ‘champion among leaders’

Guyanese President Irfan Ali on Wednesday (November 20) praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his impactful leadership and contributions in the developing world, calling him a “champion among leaders.”

Speaking during a joint statement with Modi, Ali praised the global impact of the Indian leader’s governance style and policies, noting their adoption by several countries, including Guyana.

“It is our greatest honor to have you here. You are a champion among leaders,” Ali said. “You have shown light to the developing world and created development metrics and frameworks that many are adopting in their own country. Much of it is relevant to us here in Guyana.”

PM Modi’s ongoing visit to Guyana, from November 19 to 21, is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American nation in over five decades. It was the last leg of his three nation tour that has seen him already stop by in Brazil and Nigeria.

During his trip, PM Modi engaged in comprehensive talks with Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, focusing on enhancing cooperation in sectors such as hydrocarbons, healthcare, education, and defence.

He also addressed a special session of Guyana’s National Assembly, speaking about the shared heritage between the two countries.

PM Modi co-chaired the 2nd India-CARICOM [Caribbean Community] Summit alongside President Ali and Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, discussing collaborative opportunities with Caribbean nations.
