A German court on Wednesday convicted a palliative care nurse of murdering 10 patients with lethal injections and attempting to kill 27 others, handing the nurse a life sentence.
According to a Reuters report, prosecutors said the nurse injected mostly elderly patients with painkillers or sedatives to reduce his workload during night shifts.
The court in Aachen described the crimes as “particularly severe,” meaning the nurse has little chance of release after serving the minimum 15 years required for a life sentence in Germany, added the report.
The offenses took place between December 2023 and May 2024 at a clinic near Aachen in western Germany. The verdict is open to appeal.
German media report that investigators are reviewing several other suspicious incidents during the nurse’s career.
The case recalls Germany’s deadliest post-war medical killing spree, when a former nurse was sentenced to life in 2019 for the deaths of 85 patients.
