Iranian sniper rifles, AK-47 assault rifles from China and Russia, North Korean and Bulgarian built rocket-propelled grenades, anti-tank rockets secretly cobbled together in Gaza. These are the weapons being used by Hamas against Israel during the Gaza war. During weeks of intense urban fighting in Gaza, where Hamas fighters usually have just what they can carry and use hit-and-run tactics against huge Israeli advantages in weapons and technology, those weapons have proven devastating. Videos of Hamas propaganda that have been circulated in recent weeks seem to capture Israeli soldiers being shot through the scopes of their sniper rifles. Israel maintains a significant advantage despite the build-up thanks to its potent arsenal of contemporary tanks, artillery, helicopter gunships, and fighter jets manufactured in the US. Over 7,000 Hamas militants have been killed, according to Israel’s military, while at least 510 Israeli troops have also died, more than 330 of whom were killed in Hamas’ initial offensive. More than 24,000 Palestinians have perished in the conflict, according to the Health Ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza; however, it does not distinguish between soldiers and civilians. One of the most unusual weapons being used in the Gaza war is the massive AM-50 Sayyad (Arabic for “hunter”), a sniper rifle manufactured in Iran that can penetrate up to an inch of steel with its.50-caliber cartridge. It has already been observed in the hands of Shia militias in Iraq and on battlefields in Yemen and Syria. Additionally, a variety of Soviet-era weapons that have been replicated and produced in China and Iran have been spotted on Hamas fighters. Among them are variations of the 9M32 Strela, a mobile heat-seeking anti-aircraft missile system developed by Russia. According to media reports, the Israel Defense Forces have found weapons from Hamas combatants, including what appear to be anti-tank mines with an Italian design, model number TC/6. Seán Moorhouse, an explosive ordinance disposal specialist and former British Army officer, asserted that Iran’s weaponry sector had also imitated it. Iran has long been accused by the Israel Defense Forces and US officials of providing weapons, money, and training to Hamas and other violent groups in Gaza, including the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
