The Pentagon is preparing military options for a potential “final blow” in a conflict with Iran, including the use of ground forces and extensive bombing campaigns, Axios reported on Thursday_,_ citing US officials and sources familiar with the matter.
According to the report, a “dramatic military escalation” could unfold if diplomatic talks between Tehran and Washington fail to make progress.
There are four major options on the table Trump could choose from:
Invade or blockade Kharg Island, Iran’s primary oil export hub.
Target Larak Island, a strategic post that strengthens Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz and hosts bunkers, attack craft capable of striking cargo ships, and radar installations monitoring maritime traffic.
Seize Abu Musa and two smaller nearby islands, located near the western entrance of the strait; these territories are controlled by Iran but also claimed by the UAE.
Block or capture vessels exporting Iranian oil along the eastern side of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the report, citing US officials, a “show of overwhelming force” could enhance American leverage in negotiations with Iran.
The US military has also drawn up plans for potential ground operations deep inside Iran to secure highly enriched uranium stored at nuclear facilities.
Officials say that, as an alternative to such complex and high-risk missions, large-scale airstrikes on the facilities could be carried out to prevent Iran from accessing the material.
However, President Trump has not made a decision on any of these options, and White House officials describe any ground operations as “hypothetical.”
Meanwhile, efforts by Turkey, Pakistan, and Egypt to facilitate dialogue between the two sides continue, according to the report, citing a source involved in the discussions.
The source added that while Iran has rejected initial US demands, it has not fully withdrawn from negotiations.
