Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday officially filed his candidacy for mayor in his bailiwick, the southern city of Davao, according to Bloomberg, citing his close aide Senator Bong Go.
The move signals Duterte’s return to the political arena, choosing to pursue a local position he previously held rather than a national role.
Meanwhile, his son, current Davao Mayor Sebastian Duterte, has submitted his candidacy for vice mayor, Bloomberg reported, citing a separate report by GMA News.
Salvador Panelo, the elder Duterte’s former spokesperson, earlier said that both Rodrigo and Sebastian were considering to vie for Senate seats.
Candidates for the 2025 midterm elections have until Tuesday to withdraw or make substitutions to their candidacies. The Duterte family is vying for political influence following a fallout with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. over policy disagreements, including issues related to relations with China and constitutional reform.
Meanwhile, the former president is under investigation by the International Criminal Court and Congress regarding his drug war, while his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, is facing threats of impeachment.
