Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that he will run as an independent in the upcoming mayoral race after he was defeated in the Democratic primary by Zohran Mamdani.
Although a favourite among voters in the primary, Cuomo lost the election to Mamdani, a member of the state legislature, by more than 12 points last month, pushing him out of the Democratic race for mayoral elections in New York.

“As my grandfather used to say, when you get knocked down, learn the lesson and pick yourself back up and get in the game, and that is what I’m going to do,” Cuomo said in his announcement.
Mamdani brushed off Cuomo’s return to the race, expressing confidence that he will defeat him again in the November election. Since the primary, much of the city’s Democratic establishment has rallied behind Mamdani, including labor unions that had previously supported Cuomo.
Cuomo resigned from the post of governor in 2021 after facing allegations of sexual harassment. As an independent, the former governor will be up against Republican Curtis Sliwa and the current mayor, Eric Adams, who will also run as an independent candidate.
Meanwhile, Mamdani has faced a lot of opposition from various stakeholders and US President Donald Trump over his socialist policies. Trump has branded the winner of New York City’s mayoral Democratic primary a “pure communist”.

Born in Uganda to South Asian parents, New York state assemblyman Mamdani would be the first Muslim mayor of the heavily Democratic city if he wins the general election in November.
