The Health Ministry said the World Health Organization gave it the all-clear Tuesday. Romero, a nursing assistant in Madrid's Carlos III hospital, was declared free of the virus Oct. 21, two weeks after she was diagnosed.

Romero was the first person known to have contracted the disease outside of West Africa in the latest outbreak, which has killed almost 6,000 people. She had helped treat two Spanish missionaries who died of Ebola in the hospital after being flown back from West Africa.

The ministry said 232 people who came into contact with her, including hospital staff, were monitored for possible infection.
