Minnesota has sued the Trump administration over an attempt to block the surge of federal immigration officials in the state after the killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis.

The legal challenge claims the deployment constitutes an unconstitutional “federal invasion.” According to Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, these immigration manoeuvres have destabilised the lives of millions, leading to “chaos and violence.”

The lawsuit asks a federal court to declare the deployment of ICE officials in Minnesota illegal, inviting criticism from the White House, calling the claim “baseless.”

Ellison said that the presence of ICE in the state violated its “sovereign authority to protect the health and well-being of every single person who lives within our borders.”

‘Poorly trained ICE officials’

Meanwhile, Minnesota Mayor Jacob Frey has said that anti-immigration agents are illegally targeting people after misidentifying them based on racial profiling, prompting more 911 calls from anxious citizens and forcing the local police force to work overtime.

During a recent news conference, prosecutors announced they would seek a temporary restraining order as early as Tuesday to halt the deployment. This legal move follows the Department of Homeland Security’s announcement of Operation Metro Surge, a plan to increase the federal presence in the state.

While the DHS maintains that the roughly 2,000 agents currently in Minnesota are vital for fighting crime and illegal immigration, local officials are fighting to block further reinforcements.

Noem defends ICE

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, in television interviews on Sunday, defended the actions of the ICE officer who shot and killed Good, an American citizen.

Noem said the officer acted in self-defense when Good drove her car at him, a narrative strongly disputed by local officials who point to footage from the scene showing Good’s vehicle turning away from the agent.

Noem also said that hundreds more federal agents were heading to Minneapolis, where there have been daily protests and vigils mourning Good’s death.
