At least 23 people were killed and 11 sustained injuries when an explosion ripped through a supermarket in Hermosillo, northern Mexico, on Saturday, according to local officials. Investigators believe the blast, which occurred at a Waldo’s store in the city centre, may have been caused by a malfunctioning electric transformer.
Sonora State Governor Alfonso Durazo confirmed the death toll in a video message, noting that some of the victims were minors. He said the injured were receiving treatment in local hospitals and announced an “extensive and transparent” investigation to determine the cause and identify those responsible.
The state prosecutor’s office said early findings suggested the incident was accidental and linked to a transformer inside the building. Authorities said the exact cause would be confirmed once firefighters deemed the site safe to enter.
