The bodies, apparently all men, were found in the town of San Juan Evangelista, in southern Veracruz, the state prosecutor’s office said in a statement, without providing more details.

On Tuesday, five other bodies were discovered on a road some 75 kilometers (45 miles) from the state’s capital, Xalapa. They all had gunshot wounds to the head, a municipal police officer told AFP.

The Gulf of Mexico state has endured years of turf wars between drug gangs, including the Jalisco New Generation Drug Cartel, the Zetas and the Gulf cartel.

It is also the most dangerous state for journalists in Mexico, with a dozen reporters killed since 2010.

More than 100,000 people have been killed or gone missing in drug-related violence nationwide since 2006.
