Five tourists were kidnapped, questioned, and executed by Ecuadorian gangsters who evidently believed they were part of a rival drug group, according to officials on Saturday.

Six adults and a child were abducted on Friday when about 20 attackers broke into a hotel in the southern Ecuadorian beach town of Ayampe, according to local police chief Richard Vaca.

Following hours of questioning the kidnapped tourists, who were all Ecuadorians, the bodies of five adults with gunshot wounds were discovered on a road, he claimed.

The assailants “apparently mistook them for adversaries” from a rival drug gang, said Vaca.President Daniel Noboa said one person has been arrested so far in the case and the government is tracking down the rest of the attackers.

According to Vaca, the attackers “apparently mistook them for adversaries” from a rival drug group.

According to President Daniel Noboa, the administration is locating the remaining attackers and has only detained one person in this case thus far.

Ecuador, which was formerly seen as a bulwark of peace in Latin America, is currently facing a crisis due to the rapid growth of transnational cartels that utilise its ports to transport drugs to Europe and the US.

Following a surge of violence following the jail escape of a well-known gang boss, Noboa announced a state of war against gangs and imposed a state of emergency in January.

Since then, the military has taken over the nation’s jail system and been stationed in the streets, where gang-related riots have resulted in the deaths of some 460 people in recent years.

The homicide rate in Ecuador has increased dramatically from six per 100,000 people in 2018 to 46 per 100,000 in 2023, as drug gangs engage in violent conflict.
