However, there have been no reports of damage to property due to the earthquake.

Why is Nepal prone to earthquakes?

Nepal is vulnerable to quakes due to its location. The landlocked country is situated on the precarious Himalayan seismic zone, making it a highly earthquake-prone country.

The Earth’s crust is composed of massive tectonic plates. These land masses, which comprise whole continents, are constantly moving and crashing into one another.

Nepal sits on the boundary of two enormous tectonic plates — the Asian and Indo-Australian plates. The Himalayan Mountains were created by the collision of these two plates, which also causes earthquakes.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

As per the government’s post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA) report, Nepal is the 11th most earthquake-prone country in the world.

Nepal is nestled in a geologically active region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, forming the Himalayas and making earthquakes a frequent occurrence.

The tremors were particularly felt in Bihar where people were seen outside their houses and apartments. There have been no reports of any damage to property because of the earthquake.
