A judge in the United States has dismissed the case related to the possession of classified documents by former President Donald Trump.

In her order dismissing the case, Judge Aileen Cannon said that the appointment of Special Prosecutor Jack Smith, who was probing the case, was in violation of the US Constitution.

Cannon said that since Smith’s appointment was neither confirmed by the President of the United States nor approved by Senate, it was illegal and any case brought by him after such an appointment has to be dismissed, according to The New York Times.

The case was related to Trump illegally possessing hundreds of classified documents after leaving office at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. He is also accused of showing these documents to his guests and boasting about it. The dismissal of the case comes just hours before the Republican National Convention in which Trump is set to be declared as the Republican nominee for the presidential election. The dismissal of the case is set to further bolster his standing, which is already on the upswing in the wake of sympathy following the assassination attempt on Saturday.

Smith is almost certain to appeal the dismissal in a higher court, according to The Times.

The classified documents case was one of the four cases in which Trump had been indicted ahead of the presidential elections. In one of the cases related to ‘hush money’ payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, Trump has been convicted but the sentencing has been delayed because of the Supreme Court’s ruling related to presidential immunity. The other two cases are related to seeking to overturn the 2020 presidential election and allegedly seeking to reverse the election loss in Giorgia state in 2020.

US changing its nuclear playbook? States offered deals to host radioactive waste: Report

The US may ask states to host nuclear waste storage in exchange for incentives to build new reactors, aiming to boost nuclear power. The Energy Department denies any decisions have been made. The plan would shift from the stalled Yucca Mountain project to a consent-based approach.
