In a rare and complex medical case, doctors at Cloudnine Hospital’s Faridabad centre successfully treated a 30-year-old woman diagnosed with a giant uterine fibroid weighing 16 kg, while preserving her fertility.

The patient, a Delhi resident, had suffered two spontaneous pregnancy losses over the past two years. The first miscarriage occurred at around six weeks of gestation, followed by another in August 2025. She also reported a gradual sensation of abdominal heaviness since 2023, along with a sudden and significant increase in abdominal size over the last six months.

Despite these symptoms, she did not experience any urinary, bowel or pressure-related complaints, and her menstrual cycles remained regular. This contributed to a delay in diagnosis.

Diagnostic findings

A detailed evaluation at Cloudnine Faridabad revealed a massive uterine fibroid. Ultrasonography showed a growth measuring 30 × 26 cm, while an MRI of the pelvis confirmed a giant subserosal fibroid measuring approximately 30 × 29.7 cm. The findings were consistent with a benign leiomyoma, with no evidence of malignancy.

Surgical planning and execution

Given the fibroid’s enormous size, rapid growth and its association with recurrent pregnancy loss, the medical team planned surgical intervention with a strong focus on uterine conservation.

The surgery required extensive preparation, including the availability of blood products and advanced surgical equipment. Intraoperatively, surgeons identified a giant fibroid arising from the left broad ligament, densely adherent to the bladder anteriorly and the bowel posteriorly. Through meticulous dissection and surgical expertise, the fibroid was successfully removed with minimal blood loss while preserving the uterus. The excised mass weighed 16 kg, making it one of the largest fibroids treated at the centre.

Recovery and outcome

The patient’s postoperative recovery was smooth and uneventful, and she was discharged in stable condition with her reproductive potential intact.

Commenting on the case, Dr Laxmi Goel, Director, Department of Fertility at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Faridabad, said women often ignore symptoms such as abdominal heaviness, gradual abdominal enlargement or repeated pregnancy loss, attributing them to stress or hormonal changes.

“Fibroids can grow silently and reach alarming sizes before detection. Early consultation and timely imaging can prevent complications, preserve fertility and significantly improve outcomes,” she said, adding that persistent abdominal changes and recurrent pregnancy loss warrant early medical evaluation, even in young women with otherwise regular menstrual cycles.

The successful outcome underscores Cloudnine Faridabad’s expertise in managing complex and high-risk gynaecological cases through advanced diagnostics, surgical precision and a fertility-preserving approach.
