Philadelphia: President Barack Obama delivered a powerful endorsement of his onetime rival Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, saying she is the most qualified person to succeed him at the White House. Obama’s speech capped a night of tough talk about Republican Donald Trump from an array of heavyweight speakers including Vice President Joe Biden, Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine and independent former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg. AP[/caption] Here are some key quotes from the third day of the convention in Philadelphia: Most qualified “I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman — not me, not Bill, nobody — more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America.” — President Barack Obama, with a nod to Clinton’s husband, former president Bill Clinton Meaning of democracy “Our strength, our greatness does not depend on Donald Trump. In fact, it doesn’t depend on any one person, and that in the end may be the biggest difference in this election — the meaning of our democracy.” — Obama Not a clue “He’s trying to tell us he cares about the middle class? Give me a break! That’s a bunch of malarkey! This guy doesn’t have a clue about the middle class — not a clue. (…) He has no clue about what makes America great. Actually, he has no clue, period.” — Vice-President Joe Biden, laying into Donald Trump Wrecking ball “Folks, you cannot believe one word that comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth. Not one word! (…) Our nation, it is just too great to put it in the hands of a slick-talking, empty-promising, self-promoting, one-man wrecking crew.” — Senator Tim Kaine, Clinton’s vice-presidential running mate Ultimate trust “As he’s serving our nation abroad, I trust Hillary Clinton with our son’s life.” — Kaine, whose son is a Marine and deployed two days ago to Europe Con artist? “Trump says he wants to run the nation like he’s running his business? God help us. I’m a New Yorker, and I know a con when I see one. (…) We must unite around the candidate who can defeat a dangerous demagogue.” — independent former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg Inconceivable! “He asked the Russians to interfere in American politics. Think about that. (…) As someone who was responsible for protecting our nation from cyber attacks, it is inconceivable to me that any presidential candidate would be that irresponsible.” — former CIA director and secretary of defense Leon Panetta, on Trump’s suggestion that Russia hack into Clinton’s emails Sound of death “It takes about five minutes for church bells to ring 49 times… One minute for a gun to fire so many shots, five minutes for bells to honor so many lives.” — Christine Leinonen, the mother of one of the 49 victims of the Orlando club massacre, leaving delegates in tears with her poignant four-minute speech on the need for stronger gun laws Madam President “Speaking is difficult for me, but come January, I want to say these two words — Madam President!” — former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head in 2011 by a deranged gunman Healing, hope, Hillary “It’s healing time. It’s hope time. It’s Hillary time.” — veteran civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, urging delegates to repeat the phrase with him
