While urging people to vote for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, former US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi emphasised that Harris is ready to take the United States to “new heights”. In her brief address on the third day of the Democratic National Conventions, Pelosi accused former US President Donald Trump of “brazenly assaulting the bedrock of democracy”.

The 84-year-old veteran politician was reportedly one of the key players who convinced US President Joe Biden to drop his re-election bid. Pelosi started her address by lauding the Biden administration and called it “one of the most successful presidencies of modern times”.

From here, she put forward the case for Harris, describing her as a “person of deep faith which is reflected in her community care and service.” “I know that Vice President Harris is ready to take us to new heights,” Pelosi averred. She insisted that politically, Harris is “astute and strategic in winning difficult elections.”

“I’ve known Kamala Harris for decades. Personally, I know her as a person of faith which is reflected in her community care and service,” the former speaker recalled. “Officially, she is a leader of strength, wisdom and eloquence on policy,” she added.

Pelosi recalls the horrors of January 6

During her address, Pelosi recalled the horrors of January 6 and insisted that the recovery from the Capitol riots made clear that the US “democracy is only as strong as the courage and commitment of those entrusted with its care.”

“And we must choose leaders who believe in free and fair elections, who respect the peaceful transfer of power,” she said. “The choice couldn’t be clearer. Those leaders are Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Walz,” she added.

The veteran politician also took time to laud the political career of Minnesota Governor and Harris’ VP pick Tim Walz. Touting his victory in a red district, Pelosi hailed Walz for voting for the Affordable Care Act.

Slams Trump for “attacking democracy”

Just like former US President Bill Clinton, Pelosi slammed Trump and blamed him for the Capitol riots. “Never before had a president of the United States so brazenly assaulted the bedrock of our democracy, so gleefully embraced political violence, so wilfully betrayed his oath of office,” she said.

“Let us not forget who assaulted democracy on January 6,” she added. In 2022, Pelosi bowed out to run for re-election in the midterms. However, she still remains the only woman to serve as the US Speaker of the House. The congresswoman from California still has a stronghold in the party and backed Walz’s bid for the VP ticket.
